Hungry Gator

Approached with the opportunity to collaborate with a group of Bournemouth University Postgraduate students, I was given the task of animating a rather peckish alligator.

A peculiar animal

What makes animating an alligator so fascinating and unique is the contrast in its movements: the slow, deliberate, almost mechanical gait that can suddenly explode into lightning-fast vicious attacks.

Capturing both these elements required a comprehensive range of references in order to bring authenticity to every motion.

Breaking the fourth wall

At first, the short resembles a typical nature documentary, until the alligator unexpectedly breaks the fourth wall, advancing on the crew and savagely destroying their equipment. This sequence was especially exciting to work on, as it gave me the opportunity to explore a fresh approach with extreme close-ups, dynamic interactions with the environment, and a focus on the tactile presence of the animal.

The experience was immensely rewarding and collaborating with such a talented team was a true pleasure. I am grateful for the opportunity I was given to contribute my skills and help bring their vision to life. Special thanks go to Jan and Tom.
